Yes we recorded it this time and we will have a transcript as soon as possible. Ruth Weston has the recording. We met before the meeting for a couple of hours and were joined by Elizabeth Duff (NCT) though she did not come to the NMC meeting. Present were Ruth Weston, Debbie Chippington – Derrick (AIMS) Paula Cleary (Birthplace matters) Margaret Jowitt, Deb Hughes, Katherine Hales In brief discussed:

How are NMC improving their engagement with the public?

Where do women and midwives go for support in making care choices outside guidelines after the demise of supervision.

Do NMC have checks and balances against malicious referral to Ftp?

Accountability for decisions made by NMC (eg. IM insurance decision).

We did not see Jackie Smith who is on sick leave but their new person in charge of educational standards and policy (nursing) Geraldine Walters She seemed very frank and fair but hasn’t worked long for NMC and did quite well considering she didn’t know midwifery. It was an exhausting day and I am just about recovering now – fairly useful I think.

It looks ideal Catherine and I presume reasonably priced – I couldn’t find prices unless it is free! It would be amazing to have somewhere in London for our summer meeting.

I agree wholeheartedly,I often feel the most skillful part of my job is facilitating decision making and exploring ideas with women in the antenatal period – indeed it is often the skill that women really appreciate. It is lovely attending a birth however I don’t think it should be looked upon as the main part of our role.
