    Hi my name is Jeannine
Just joined this evening, I am a midwife from Ireland, working in Dublin.
I am a good friend of Dr Jo Murphy Lawless who was my sociology lecturer at college, I know she has long since been involved with AIMS. Currently struggling over the last few days with the vilification of midwives and ‘normal birth’and I really welcomed your press release today.
Glad to be amongst you all 🙂

    Hi Jeannine

We know Jo. In fact I am pretty sure she came to speak at an ARM study day once upon a time.

Lovely to meet you. We are hoping to get this forum active very shortly. Perhaps you might like to start the ball rolling with a topic for discussion?

    Hi Linda,
    Thanks for the welcome…
A topic how about, ‘why are midwives defined by birth, midwifery is so much more’

Welcome, Jeannine, to our new Website and Forum.

I like your topic, and you’re quite right about the way “Midwifery” seems to focus on the birth. As midwives, we learn about pregnancy as a long term condition, and all the changes which take place within the woman’s body, as well as the development of the child from conception to birth and a few weeks afterwards. In other words, ‘midwifery’ is about approximately 9 months of a woman’s life.

It’s a topic which could gain from wider discussion, both public and professional. One of our information leaflets is called “What is a Midwife”, (recently incorporated with other info into a general ARM information booklet).

    Yes, welcome Jeanine,
Unfortunately the NMC has recently allowed legislation to be passed which may have the effect of completely narrowing the role of the midwife to just that – the only legal responsibility know is in relation to birth.
This is one of the reasons we have set up the #save the midwife campaign.

Hi Jeannine, lovely to meet you and it’s great that you’ve joined both ARM and our new forum! I’ll start a new topic in the main member forum on your subject ‘why are midwives defined by birth, midwifery is so much more’?
